Steven Spielberg Returns to the Skies with Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg has explored the concept of extraterrestrial life in some of his past films, ranging from E.T’s pleasant visitors to War of the Worlds’ invading army. But he’s been focusing on presenting more intimate stories with films like The Fabelmans, so it’s no surprise that he’s returning to science fiction with his new picture, ‘Disclosure Day,’ which will be released in theaters on June 12, 2026.

Universal Pictures kept the facts of this movie under wraps for much longer than normal, even for one of the most well-known directors. Meanwhile, in New York and Los Angeles, cryptic billboards appeared, depicting an upside-down eye and the words “All shall be revealed,” and let me tell you, fans had a fun day speculating for months. Now we have the first teaser trailer, which provides us an early look at what to expect from this new sci-fi adventure.

The film stars Emily Blunt as a TV weather reporter. We catch a glimpse of her on set presenting a forecast when everything goes haywire, and all we hear is a series of bizarre clicking sounds, as if she’s lost control to an outside entity. Josh O’Connor stars as a man who is eager to share some fairly persuasive information he has discovered with the rest of the world – and one of the lines from the trailer is: “People have a right to know the truth. It belongs to seven billion people.” Another voice questions: “Why would He make such a vast universe yet save it only for us?”

As things become stranger by the minute, all sorts of unusual events begin to unfold: birds fly around in strange patterns, animals stare blankly at nothing, and crop circles develop in the center of fields. In the midst of all this chaos, we see several automobile chases, but we have yet to see any actual shots of alien spacecraft or beings, leaving plenty of opportunity for speculation about whether or not evidence of life beyond Earth exists. Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell round out the cast, and Domingo has been talking about how much he loves the script, which he says focuses on people’s potential to be more than just what they currently are.

Spielberg came up with the initial idea for this story himself and collaborated with David Koepp to develop it into a script; Koepp, of course, has a long history of working with Spielberg on some of their most famous sci-fi films. We know it happened in New Jersey earlier this year, and the filmmaker has stated on multiple occasions that he believes we are not the only intelligent species in the cosmos; there are simply too many strange occurrences out there to ignore. Given that there have been numerous real-world talks concerning mysterious phenomena, as well as documentaries exploring similar topics, this film is very timely.

It’s been a while since Spielberg has tackled this type of theme, such as in some of his earlier sci-fi films from the 1980s. But this new film, Disclosure Day, promises to provide a different perspective, combining all of the wonder of science fiction with just the perfect amount of discomfort to keep you on the edge of your seat. The teaser ends on the studio’s line: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?”
