Banjo-Kazooie Returns on PC as Banjo: Recompiled, the Surprising Recompiled Revival

For many old-school platformer fans, the wait for a good remake of the legendary Nintendo 64 title from 1998, “Banjo-Kazooie,” has been an interminably long time, and yet, even after thirty years, the game still holds a special place in the hearts of many. It has kind of languished away on old hardware or within the Nintendo 64 emulation scene, and this has all come to an end with the release of a PC port, titled “Banjo: Recompiled,” courtesy of several dedicated modders.
This is the first time we’ve ever seen this bear and bird duo on Windows, Linux, as well as Mac, and honestly, this version is packed with some much-needed upgrades. The developers have employed the latest in technology, known as static recompilation using N64:Recompiled, which is basically the original machine code but recompiled into something the computer can understand without the need for emulation.
So, the game plays silky smooth on the PC, far smoother than any other way to play it, and almost as smooth as the original. The sounds and sights are just as they were in the original N64 version, with no lag or unpleasant ticky visuals like other emulators have. Even the smallest details, like as a jigsaw puzzle or moving visuals in Bottles’ levels, work perfectly. The original mip-mapping is still present, which makes the game look very authentic.

Players are now able to play the game in 4K resolutions with frame rates that are much higher than the original 30fps that the Nintendo 64 offered. Many players are content with playing the game in 120fps or higher with relatively decent hardware. It is great that players are now able to play the game in 120fps or higher, and the jumps are a little more responsive. It is also great that the game is now available on ultrawide monitors, so players are able to set the field of vision and the HUD so that objects are not distorted and stretched on the screen. Even the cutscenes are played in widescreen with all the models being enlarged up to suit. The new twin analog controls are much better than the original C-button controls that the Nintendo 64 offered, which allowed players to use one stick to control Banjo and the other stick to control the camera.

The game now takes into account all of your notes, so if you forget one, you don’t have to play the entire thing again from the start. They’ve also cut down the loading times and gotten rid of the input lag that comes with emulation. They’ve also used the RT64 rendering engine to fix the graphics, which allows them to implement some truly amazing graphical improvements while still capturing the original feel of the game.

The system requirements are kept low on purpose so that users with not so powerful systems can also enjoy this game. To start with this game, you’ll need a graphics card with Direct3D12, Vulkan 1.2, or Metal if you’re using an Apple device. That’s it! Also, if you’re using a CPU that supports SES4.1, you’re good to go! ARM64 users, this one works like a dream for you! This game also runs at a smooth 90 FPS while using relatively less power on Steam Deck.

If you’d like to try it, you’ll need a North American version 1.0 ROM of the game to start with. The mod’s executable is freely downloadable from the Github page, although it should be noted that this download does not contain any copyrighted content. Simply place the ROM in the same directory as the software, and you’ll be running around Spiral Mountain in no time, but note that this only works with North American ROMs.
