All-Electric BMW M3 Set to Arrive in 2027 with Simulated Gear Shifts

The all-electric 2027 BMW M3 is on its way, and it’s about to raise the bar for what a high-performance sedan can do. BMW is calling this the beginning of a new chapter for the M division, and based on what they’ve revealed thus far, this car is designed from the ground up for speed, control, and ease of daily use.

Power comes from four electric motors, one in each wheel. There are two motors in the front, each with its own gearbox, and another pair in the back. This system eliminates all mechanical differentials and instead relies on the computer to distribute torque exactly where it is needed. The system allows you to make real-time adjustments to traction, stability, and cornering force while driving. You can even switch to rear wheel drive by decoupling the front motors completely which enhances efficiency on the highway and gives you that traditional rear drive sensation that M aficionados know and love.

The vehicle has a large performance battery pack that produces more than 100 kwh of useful electricity. BMW has gone all out to make this thing track-ready, with a bespoke battery design, superior cooling, and a clever control unit that happens to be located outside the battery itself. The battery is engineered in such a way that it adds to the car’s structural stiffness, allowing it to handle beautifully. Then there’s the 800-volt electrical system, which allows you to charge quickly, and the regenerative braking system, which returns some of that energy without sacrificing any of the feel.
BMW is combining all of its high-performance processors into a single unit nicknamed the Heart of Joy. This is the car’s central nervous system, which controls everything from motor control to stability systems, allowing it to respond quickly and provide seamless over-the-air updates. I mean, achieving that level of precision with a mechanical system is quite difficult.

Lightweight natural fiber materials make their debut in the M range. That’s all motorsport know-how, and it makes the car lighter and emits less pollutants than if it had used carbon fiber, while still providing all of the necessary strength. The car will also go some ways in terms of looks, with larger fenders, forceful bumpers, and massive brakes that will seem magnificent, but it will retain the sleek, modern design of the Neue Klasse family, as evidenced by the trademark slanty LED headlights.

BMW will sell both the electric and gas-powered M3 alongside each other in 2027, giving you an option. There’s a lot going on in this car, and it’s designed to provide track-car performance while being practical as a daily driver. Rather than chasing speed, this car is intended to provide you with range for everyday use as well as keep you going after you’ve pushed it through its paces on the racetrack. As for the details, well, anticipate it to reach Porsche 911 GT3 levels, we’re talking about upwards of 800 to 900 horsepower, but none of that has been formally confirmed yet.
