How much sacking Ruben Amorim will cost Man Utd | Football
Ruben Amorim has been dismissed as manager of Manchester United, a decision which will cost the club a lot of money.
The 40-year-old leaves after headline-grabbing comments on Sunday after a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Portuguese hit out at the Manchester United hierarchy, saying he intends to be the manager of the club and not just a head coach.
He also made it clear that he was planning to leave at the end of his contract in 2027, although that departure has come around a lot sooner than that.
‘I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that,’ he said in Leeds.
‘That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.
‘If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticism of everything, we need to change the club. No, no guys, I would say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach.
‘Every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. Thank you, guys.’
Those words came on Sunday afternoon and Amorim was sacked on Monday morning, with Darren Fletcher being asked to step in and lead the team at Burnley on Wednesday.
How much does sacking Amorim cost Manchester United?
There are varying reports on how much the decision will cost the Red Devils, but Sky Sports put the figure at £12m.
Amorim was also not cheap to hire, with Manchester United paying his release clause in his Sporting contract in 2024, which was worth 11m euros (£9.25m).

There have been a number of expensive mistakes in recent times at Old Trafford, with the club spending £14.5million to get rid of Amorim’s predecessor Erik ten Hag, his staff and sporting director Dan Ashworth in 2024.
The Red Devils also spent plenty in the transfer market during Amorim’s reign, with £262m going on transfer fees since he was appointed.
Manchester United club statement
Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.
