Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as manager after a spell in charge which has produced some woeful statistics under the Portuguese coach.

The 40-year-old’s last game in charge proved to be a 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday, with the Red Devils sitting sixth in the Premier League table at the end of the weekend’s action.

It was not that result which saw the manager axed, but more his comments after the game, when he made something of a power play which has ended in him leaving.

‘I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear,’ he said at Elland Road.

He also suggested he intended to move on at the end of the 2026/27 season, saying: ‘I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that.

‘That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.’

Amorim’s departure has come a lot sooner than the summer of 2027, and he leaves behind a set of statistics which will not look good on his CV.

Win percentage

Amorim’s Manchester United reign comes to an end on 62 matches, which produced 24 wins, 17 draws and 21 defeats.

His win percentage was 38.71, the lowest of any permanent Red Devils manager in the Premier League era. Specifically in the Premier League, he won just 32 per cent of his matches, also the worst of any Manchester Untied boss.

Ralf Rangnick did have a slightly lower win rate (37.93) during his interim spell in charge which ended in May 2022.

The last time a permanent Manchester United manager had a lower win rate than Amorim was Frank O’Farrell from 1971-72 when he won 37.04 per cent of his matches in charge.

Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, win 54.69 per cent of the 128 games he managed.

Manchester United’s worst Premier League season

Amorim took over in November 2024, so it is not entirely on his shoulders, but last season was the club’s worst in the Premier League.

A 15th-place finish for the Red Devils was by far the worst in the division’s history, with Erik ten Hag’s side finishing eighth the season before the previous low point.

The Red Devils picked up their fewest ever points in a Premier League season, 42, won the fewest number of games, 11, and scored the fewest amount of goals, 44.
