Vishy Ayyar and Andrew Gray (“Power Rangers Megaforce”) star in the new mixed martial arts film “American Warrior.”

The synopsis is: A man with a troubled past, Jai (Vishy Ayyar) decides to turn his life around after a heroic act at a convenience store by training for a mixed martial arts tournament, where ironically enough, he has a rematch with the fighter Marcus Cahill (Andrew Gray) that tried to con and steal the store.

Jai goes to prison for fraud and the majority of his family members turn their backs on him, with the exception of his physician sister Priya (played by Suleka Mathew).

Vishy Ayyar is natural, subtle, and ambitious as Jai, he layers his emotions well, and allows the audience into his complex world and psyche as he battles his inner and external demons with his family and MMA respectively.

Andrew Gray is transformative in the role of Marcus, where he got his body in tip-top shape to play the star MMA fighter (as Marcus and Jai have their big fight).

Veteran actor Danny Trejo, who plays the American History professor and Jai’s MMA coach, is the voice of reason as Dennis.

Taylor Treadwell is fabulous as Melissa, Jai’s supportive female love interest, who is his pillar of strength and comfort. Veronica Falcón also stars as Marcella, the woman in charge of the gym.

Gustavo Martin directed from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Matthew Mascia, which was based on an original story by Vishy Ayyar.

This movie is rich in symbolism, especially if one pays close attention, and its musical score is quite haunting and stirring.

The Verdict

Overall, “American Warrior” is an inspirational and heartwarming underdog story. Vishy Ayyar is going to take viewers on a wild and bumpy ride with him, as they get to see things from his perspective as Jai, as he showcases his indomitable spirit and heart of a champion.

It is highly recommended that one checks out this film, which is the epitome of the American dream and second chances. “American Warrior” garners four out of five stars. Well done.
