LEGO Ideas Portal 2 Test Chamber Creator Lets You Build Your Own Aperture Science Puzzles in Brick Form

KaijuBuilds has created a new take on Portal 2 for LEGO Ideas, transforming Portal’s apparently infinite test rooms into a hands-on LEGO build with approximately 1280 pieces. Builders start with a large orange base plate covered in little connection points. Tiles snap on securely using short and long connectors held by technic pins and axles. These keep everything stable no matter how often someone rearranges the layout.

There are twenty-nine modules in total, covering eighteen different tile kinds, providing lots of variation. The standard white panels all fit as either clean walls or floors, but others have some real character, such as orange or blue power conduits running along the surfaces or tiles with vegetation bursting through cracks, giving you a good sense of the old, rickety feel of Aperture’s dilapidated facilities. Dark grey portions and observation windows bring the entire site to life, and there’s even a “25” sign with hazard signals for good measure.

What truly brings the place to life are the deadly details, such as translucent orange goo tiles that cover 8×8 sections, a red laser grid to block off paths, and buttons that include a conventional 4×4 version and the simply gigantic Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button on its own tile.

When it comes to using this set, there are numerous functional sections that add real play value. An airborne faith plate on a 4×8 tile will launch your minifigures when you press it with your hand. The accompanying cube dropper elevates the famous heart-marked cube and allows you to release it on demand. The tilting platform can be adjusted at various angles to provide different puzzle pathways or to simply make things more interesting. The swinging door can be programmed to open or close to block off entries or exits as needed.

The portals themselves are translucent orange and blue oval pieces that you may adhere to the walls. Chell carries her beloved portal rifle to complete the look, though the portals are fixed in place for display and play. You also get a large number of minifigures, including all of the important characters from Portal 2. Chell is in her orange jumpsuit with those helpful long-fall boots, and if you have buddies who enjoy playing co-op, you can purchase Atlas and P-body robots. Then there are the turrets, with their white bodies and glowing red eyes. Wheatley? He has a customizable personality core and a glowing blue eye to set him apart.

It’s simple to move modules around and change the arrangement, allowing you to build a variety of unique combinations or replicate some of the game’s iconic rooms. You can even do it in one room or stretch it across a larger area with numerous bases to create some major multi-stage puzzles. You may utilize the pillars and connectors to support vertical walls, and minor details like crows perched on the pillars or overgrown tiles mixed in with spotless ones all assist to maintain the Aperture environment.

This proposal is still in the early stages of the LEGO Ideas process, with just over 1,700 supporters, but it still has a long way to go, with over 540 days remaining to achieve the magical 10,000 mark.
