Nintendo’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct Trailer Reveals Yoshi, Birdo

Nintendo woke their fans up bright and early this morning for an all-new Nintendo Direct, which was fully focused on what the upcoming animated The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has to offer. Shigeru Miyamoto hosted this presentation, which provided us with a new look at what’s to come as well as a slew of great updates on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The true show-stopper came with Yoshi’s first full reveal.
Mario and Luigi were riding motorcycles across the desert of the Sand Kingdom, with an inverted pyramid in the background. They used their trusty Fire Flowers to illuminate the way into a dark area where, to our surprise, some of the underground music from the original games kicked in. They ultimately spotted Yoshi within a clogged Warp Pipe, and it was emerging from an egg that referenced the post-credits tease at the end of the first film. He began out hesitant, mumbling his name and flinching at the brothers, but he quickly warmed up and joined them on their expedition. However, no one has been announced to voice him yet.

Birdo made an appearance by chucking eggs at Princess Peach during a separate little mission she was on, while Mouser, that rodent boss from Super Mario Bros. 2, appeared in the same sequence without making much of a splash. Lakitu began firing at the crew, and at one point, a large T-Rex-like dinosaur from Super Mario Odyssey appeared to create some havoc. Toad was also seen cradling Baby Mario and Luigi at one time, possibly indicating a flashback or family event. For the record, Yoshi was brandishing a device that resembled the old Super Scope we all adored on the SNES.

The plot draws aspects from all throughout the Mario universe, but it is centered on the galaxy-spanning adventure that is at the heart of Super Mario Galaxy. Mario and Peach are navigating a lava-filled zone that resembles Bowser’s Castle from the old days, and Luigi has worn the Frog Suit to go save Toad from a monster Cheep Cheep. It all combines high-energy gameplay with references to classic levels and power-ups.

The animation for the film is now complete, and the crew is moving on to post-production, which involves sound design and music, including new recordings of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtracks. The US release date has been adjusted to better align with the global calendar; it will now premiere in theaters on April 1st, 2026, a few days earlier than the originally planned April 3rd date. In Japan, it is April 24, but other regions will have their turn at some point in April.
