Sony released the Trinitron KV-3000R television in 1981, which redefined luxury. This console was the peak of their lineup, combining modern picture technology with a truly high-end living room cabinet. It cost a hefty $10,000, including delivery, which is now comparable to a startling $35,000, but was an ultimate luxury in a suffering economy.

Sony only produced 1,000 of these sets, which added to its allure, making the KV-3000R a rather uncommon and highly sought-after piece of equipment. What truly sold it, however, were the specifications, which included a 30-inch Trinitron color tube, the largest Sony had ever produced for a consumer model. That screen delivered Trinitron’s hallmark clarity: razor-sharp focus thanks to aperture-grille technology, rich colors, and contrast that made the images stand out and capture your attention in ways competitors couldn’t.

The cabinet itself was a work of art, coated with stunning Tamo ash veneer from Hokkaido, Japan, with an intricate grain that caught the light and revealed these incredibly delicate patterns. When it came time to store the screen, one of the first things you noticed about the KV-3000R was how easily the sliding hardwood panels closed with the press of a button. The aluminum trim offered a touch of sophistication, and there was even a safety feature that would activate if anything got in the way of the doors closing. This thing was heavy, weighing 510 pounds, so it was one of those sets that required professional delivery rather than hauling it home from the store. To top it off, each one came with a custom-engraved badge with the owner’s name and a sequential number on it.

For a clean and minimalist appearance, the controls were hidden behind some additional panels. You could use these simple dials to control the volume, channel selection, and picture clarity, and there was even a matrix sound system to enhance the audio from the built-in dual bass-reflex speakers. Video and audio inputs allowed you to connect all of the latest technologies, such as VCRs, and there was also a wonderful digital channel display that would glow softly in the background.

Sony even went above and above, including extensive instruction guides, schematics for when you needed to dive under the hood and perform some repairs, and even spare sheets of Tamo ash veneer in case anything needed to be touched up. They also included a matching Betamax stand with its own tambour door, which was ideal for storing all of your tapes and accessories.

This luxurious piece could even be found in the 1981 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue, alongside other extravagant things such as a $17,000 wine-pouring robot and a $150,000 fur coat. It was a serious statement piece for those who appreciated the finest things in life. Some even appeared on game shows as prizes.
