Volvo Teases Upcoming EX60, the Electric Midsize SUV with 400-Miles of Range

Volvo is making another significant jump into electric vehicles with the EX60, a midsize crossover that will be available soon. This one is positioned right in the middle, between the smaller EX40 and the bigger EX90, and it’s geared firmly at families who want a practical electric car that doesn’t sacrifice range or convenience. The exact details will be revealed on January 21, 2026 during a livestreamed event, and production begins in the first half of the year at their Gothenburg factory.

Range is expected to be a strong selling point. Volvo claims an estimated 400 miles under official EPA testing for some configurations, addressing some of the worries about how far you can truly travel in an electric vehicle. In European WLTP testing, they’re already achieving some fairly fantastic statistics, up to 810 kilometers in all-wheel drive variants, to be precise, though real-world results will vary depending on factors such as temperature, driving style, and topography.

The charging situation is very ambitious, as Volvo is utilizing an 800V electrical system, a first for the brand, to enable peak rates of up to 400 kilowatts at suitable stations. In the proper conditions, you can add approximately 168 miles of range in only 10 minutes, or up to 340 kilometers, as some testing have indicated. Even if you want to charge from 10% to 100% in one go, high-power chargers can do it in roughly 19 minutes. Another benefit is that Breathe Battery Technologies offers software that optimizes power intake in various weather conditions, as well as preconditioning that prepares the battery for speedier sessions.

All of this is achievable because of important improvements in the EX60’s structure. It is constructed on a unique platform intended specifically for electric automobiles, allowing the battery pack to be integrated directly into the vehicle frame. This maximizes inside space, minimizes total weight, and increases overall rigidity. To make things even easier, Volvo is employing a technique known as megacasting, which involves forming large elements such as the rear floor as single aluminum pieces rather than numerous smaller bits. That translates to fewer components, a lighter construction, and far simpler manufacturing.

The EX60’s electric motors are all engineered to provide maximum efficiency rather than raw power. We don’t know the actual output figures yet, but dual-motor all-wheel drive appears to be a possibility, and it will be quite powerful, especially in the higher trim levels. As you’d expect from a Volvo, bidirectional charging will be standard, allowing you to plug your car in at home or sell energy back to the grid in any market. A 10-year battery warranty will provide you with plenty of peace of mind over time.

The car’s appearance is consistent with Volvo’s current electric styling cues, including clean lines, vertical rear lights, and a closed front grille. The interior will be modeled on the EX30 and EX90, with a simple Scandinavian design and large center screens. The structural battery plus all of the smart driver aids you’d expect to see in a Volvo will make safety a high priority.

Pricing appears to be acceptable, ranging from $60,000 to $63,000 depending on area and extras, and is about comparable to the current XC60 plug-in hybrid. This car will be available in select areas beginning in 2026, with a broader rollout to follow as production ramps up.
