Manchester United are without a slew of first-team options as Ruben Amorim’s side prepare to host Newcastle United in the Premier League today.

The Red Devils are still without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui, who are only just beginning their respective journeys at this year’s AFCON.

Their absences against Aston Villa forced Amorim into a change of personnel, and the Portuguese tactician will have to get creative once again after more bad injury news in recent days.

Bruno Fernandes has been virtually ever-present in recent seasons, but the United skipper now faces a spell on the sidelines having picked up an injury which saw him withdrawn at half-time against Villa.

His absence would normally open the door for Kobbie Mainoo, but the academy graduate is also unavailable after picking up an injury during training.

‘They are recovering. I don’t think that it is going to take a lot of time. Kobbie is going to return faster than Bruno,’ Amorim said in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference.

‘I don’t want to say [how long Bruno will be out]. I have an idea of course, but let’s see.’

Further back in defence, Amorim confirmed that neither Harry Maguire nor Matthijs de Ligt are fit enough to make their return, but the pair could be in contention for the visit of Wolves four days later on December 30.

Leny Yoro endured a torrid afternoon up against the in-form Morgan Rogers, and the young Frenchman may be taken out of the firing line against Newcastle.

But in attack, there is little option for rotation, with the trio of Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko expected to start once again.

Joshua Zirkzee remains an option, but after three straight starts earlier this month, the Dutchman has seen his minutes reduced once again after Sesko and Cunha’s return to fitness.

Casemiro’s return from a one-match suspension should see him replace the injured Fernandes in central midfield, with Manuel Ugarte his likely partner.

Lisandro Martinez is yet to start a game since his return from a long-term knee injury, but could be required to step in from the start after Yoro’s shakey display against Villa.

Amorim has shown a rare willingness to change his system in recent weeks, and he may feel the need to do so again, given United have won only one of their last six meetings with Newcastle.
