Actor Tyler Scherer chatted about starring in vertical dramas and being a part of the digital age.
Background on Tyler Scherer
Scherer grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is one of seven siblings. He began his career in the theater, appearing in over 30 plays and musicals, which include the national tour of “Beauty and the Beast.”
Scherer moved into television with a prolific career in national commercials and indie films, which led to success in verticals.
Daily motivations as an actor
On his daily motivations as an actor, he remarked, “It comes from a special place. I started doing musical theatre at a pretty young age, and I had an older brother who did it. So, that is what got me into it.”
“Also, I love the experience and the escape of it. I love following different characters and challenging myself and doing things that scares me, and put me out of my comfort zone,” he explained.
“At this point in my career, I’m looking for scripts that have that ‘it factor’ to them… something that means something to me,” he noted.
“Basically, I’m looking for scripts that have heart to them,” he added.
Scherer of being a part of the vertical drama world
On his experience in the vertical micro drama world, Scherer said, “It has been great! I have been in this space for a little over a year and a half now. It is honestly like a dream come true!”
Scherer enjoys being a part of the vertical family alongside such gifted and versatile actors as Noah Fearnley, Eric Guilmette, Seth Edeen, and Luke Charles Stafford. “The brotherhood we all have is awesome,” Scherer admitted.
Scherer also had great words about actor Kyle “Kiki” Fragnoli, who is filming movies overseas. “Kyle is like a brother to me,” he said. “I love Kyle; he is doing big things these days.”
The digital age
On being an actor in the digital age, at a time when streaming, technology and social media are so prevalent, Scherer stated, “It feels good! I understand where the film industry is going and where it is heading towards.”
“I still think that going to the theater is special and seeing a movie in theaters on the big screen is an amazing experience that you necessarily can’t get on streaming platforms,” Scherer elaborated.
“I mean, I love what streaming has brought to the film industry, a certain relevancy but at the end of the day, I still love going to the theater and seeing a movie up on the big screen,” he noted.
Future plans
On his future plans, Scherer shared, “I want to keep growing in this space and outside of this space. One of my goals in the New Year is to take this success that I’ve had in the vertical world and transition it into bigger and better things.”
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and emerging actors, Scherer underscored, “It’s all about consistency and discipline. I think there’s a reputation in Hollywood since a lot of the actors want to be famous and go that whole route of becoming influencers, which I’m not knocking that at all.”
“For me, the actors that I look up to are the ones that put in the work… the ones that went to class and studied, whether it was from the stage or the Meisner technique or the Stanislavski method,” he said.
“I try to pass all that along to younger kids that I speak to that are just starting out in verticals because it’s s all about learning the craft. It is important for aspiring actors to hone their craft,” he acknowledged.
Superpower of choice
On his superpower of choice, he revealed, “It would be to pause time.”
Stage of his life
On the title of the current chapter of his life, he responded, “I think I’m at a point in my in my personal and my professional career where there is going to be a huge change in both, and for the better.
“I really feel like I have a momentum in my professional career and I’m also getting to the age where I want to experience a family as well,” he noted.
“So, I feel like in the next year or two, a huge, change is coming my way,” he added.
Thus far, his proudest achievement is being the “World’s Best Uncle” to his eight nieces and nephews.
Success
On his definition of the word success, Scherer remarked, “I was actually thinking about that the other day because there are so many actors that I’m around and that I surround myself with right now who are in the process of achieving success in their mind.”
“You know, we all want that big break,” he admitted. “We want to take that next step and be on a TV show or a big film for a streaming service. I try to remember that. You hear these successful actors talk about it all the time once they’ve gotten to the other side.
Scherer continued, “The best time in their lives was that journey they were on roughing it and trying to make it. So, I try to remember that just being in L.A., where I am auditioning, working in verticals, I’m on set every day, and I’m not having to work a restaurant job. That is success to me.”
“I used to pray for times like the ones I’m in right now where I can just be on set every week and have a chance to hone my craft. So, I think success is different for every person. Right now, I feel that I am successful,” he explained.
Message for his fans
For his fans and supporters, Scherer expressed, “Thank you… I try to say it as much as I can. Without the fans, we would be nothing! Literally, we would be nothing. We would just be making short films.”
“Without the people that care about these movies who spend the time and their hard-earned money, it’s not lost on me or any of the other actors. We are all so incredibly grateful for their love and attention,” he elaborated.
“There is no better community out there to me. It’s overwhelming how much love they show me. I have so much gratitude for them,” Scherer said, effusively.
