Rock singer-songwriter Vedder Gabriel chatted about the new single “Broken Dreams” with Yoyoka and Frank Simes.

How did “Broken Dreams” come about?

YOYOKA, a 15-year-old female Japanese drumming prodigy was working on “Broken Dreams” with Frank Simes, the former musical director of The Who, and needed a vocalist with a big vocal range.

They saw my Journey covers and direct messaged me on Instagram. I immediately connected with the complexity of the vocals and really enjoyed bringing it to life.

What inspires your music and songwriting?

The pain and joy of everyday life. Desmond Child told me “If it makes you uncomfortable, you’re getting close. Go Further!” I write and compose everyday.

How was the music video making process for you?

So much fun! I loved Keita Hagiwara’s script. We shot in six different locations really capturing the beauty of Los Angeles. It was also my first time meeting Yoyoka in person. We immediately connected.

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

Unfortunately, most of my biggest influences are no longer with us: Chris Cornell, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Scott Weiland, George Michael and Layne Staley.

I’ve been so blessed to have mentors like Jared Leto, Chris Stapleton, Desmond Child, Brad Paisley, and Kevin Martin of Candlebox.

How does it feel to be a part of the digital age?

Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong decade, but without the digital age so many of my musical opportunities would have not come to fruition.

From being shared by Queen’s official account to being invited to take the stage with Rascal Flatts, the digital age and the magic of music made that happen.

Which artists would you like to do a dream duet with someday?

My list is so long: Dolly Parton, Radiohead, Lainey Wilson, Miley Cyrus and Journey. I also have a long list of songwriting legends I’d love to collaborate with like Desmond Child, Victoria Shaw, and Shane McAnally.

What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)

Writing a song that can literally save a life or even just give someone enough strength to get through their day. That’s success.

What’s the message that you want people to get out of “Broken Dreams”?

Be open to all opportunities. I was a big fan of Yoyoka and jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with her. Now we have a friendship and song that will live forever. I’m looking forward to creating more music with her and Frank Simes in the future.
