Manchester United hero Teddy Sheringham feels there is a future at the club for Rasmus Hojlund and he could get another chance to impress at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old is on loan for the season at Napoli after a difficult two yeas with the Red Devils.

The Dane was signed from Atalanta in 2023 and had a steady enough first season at the club, scoring 16 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions.

His second campaign was not so good, netting 10 times in 52 outings and regularly struggling to make much impact at all under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim.

With the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo arriving last summer, Hojlund was shipped off to Napoli, where he is returning to form.

His goal in the Champions League against Chelsea on Wednesday night was his 10th in 28 outings for the Italian side.

ESPN reported that the loan move included an obligation to buy if Napoli qualify for next season’s Champions League, so there be no chance of a return to Manchester United, but if there is, Sheringham believes the Red Devils should take it.

‘Yes, I do. I believe that things change very quickly at football clubs, especially when there’s different people in charge of those football clubs,’ Sheringham told Mr Q on whether Hojlund could have a Manchester United future.

‘Who knows what relationship Michael Carrick has with players like Rasmus Hojlund? He might have a way of getting the best out of him. He’s already on the books at the football club, so Hojlund will come into Carrick’s equation in the summer.

‘I don’t care what’s gone on before, he’s obviously a top footballer, otherwise he wouldn’t have got to Manchester United in the first place.

‘So I would say bring him back in, let’s give him a chance to see where he’s at and see where his mindset is when he comes back.

‘We need to find out if he has still got the fire in his belly to play for Manchester United. Does he think he’s good enough himself? Does he want it? You go from there.

‘Like I’ve said, things change very quickly in football. There’s a different manager in charge now, and there could be another different one in the summer who has a whole new outlook, so why not?’

Carrick is in interim charge now, but whether he will be manager next season is yet to be seen.

The 44-year-old has started has started his spell in charge perfectly, with wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, but club legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville believe that he should not be given the job permanently, even if he does brilliantly well for the rest of the season.

Whether Hojlund returns to Old Trafford and competes with Sesko and Mbeumo up front, the next permanent manager would likely have a say in it.

It may still be preferable for the Red Devils to cash in on the Denmark international, with Napoli’s obligation to buy him in the summer worth around £38m.

Hojlund himself has also hinted that he fancies staying in Italy, given the choice.
