Kobbie Mainoo ‘likes’ post throwing shade at Ruben Amorim after Man Utd sacking | Football
Kobbie Mainoo appeared to revel in Ruben Amorim’s departure from Manchester United, ‘liking’ a post on Instagram throwing shade at his former boss.
United announced that Amorim had been relieved of his duties on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the side had played out a 1-1 draw away to bitter rivals Leeds.
The Portuguese had dropped a massive hint that all was not right behind the scenes following Sunday’s contest as he launched an explosive rant seemingly aimed at United’s board.
In the stunning 122-word outburst, which came right at the end of his post-match press conference, Amorim stressed that he took on the job to be ‘manager’ and ‘not just a coach’.
The 40-year-old also suggested he would be prepared to ‘move on’ from his position upon the expiration of his contract in 18 months’ time – a decision that was ultimately taken out of his hands.
Under-18 head coach Darren Fletcher, who won five Premier League titles with United as a player, has taken charge on an interim basis ahead of Wednesday’s encounter with Burnley at Turf Moor.
Amorim’s departure could, in turn, see a return to the fold for academy product Mainoo, who burst onto the scene as a potential superstar in waiting at Old Trafford before falling out of favour under the ex-Sporting boss.
Mainoo is still yet to make a single start in the Premier League this season and there were incessant rumours throughout the latter stages of Amorim’s reign that the 20-year-old could depart his boyhood team in search of regular minutes elsewhere.
This came to a head when Mainoo’s half-brother Jordan Mainoo-Hames was pictured wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words ‘FREE KOBBIE MAINOO’ during United’s 4-4 thriller with Bournemouth last month.
It’s unclear if Kobbie had any say in his older sibling’s choice of outfit that day, with the England international instead preferring to keep his head down and let his football do the talking throughout his time on the periphery.
But if Mainoo’s latest social media antics are anything to go by, it appears he isn’t too upset to see the back of Amorim.

Eagle-eyed United fans spotted that Mainoo had ‘liked’ a post from widely followed Instagram page @thatguysjokes which showcased a series of memes questioning Amorim’s mindset and morals in the wake of his sacking.
‘Type of night out Amorim and his boys are gonna have tonight when their compensation package lands,’ one of the posts read, along with a video of Jordan Belfort and his entourage dancing in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street.
Another, showing Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in fits of laughter, reads: ‘Amorim after hiring all his best mates to be the coaching staff and getting them a fat payout.’
Mainoo isn’t the first player to seemingly celebrate Amorim’s demise, with Alejandro Garnacho – who has since joined Chelsea – caught ‘liking’ Fabrizio Romano’s post breaking the news of his dismissal on Monday.
Amorim repeatedly stressed that Mainoo’s lack of game-time could largely be put down to the fact he was competing for minutes with Bruno Fernandes, United’s captain and talisman.
Before the side’s Boxing Day win over Newcastle, Amorim urged Mainoo to ‘wait for his chance’ and backed the youngster to go on and be ‘the future’ of the club.
‘Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity he has all the time,’ he told reporters.
‘He played in different positions – we talked about the position of Casemiro, he can do that. If you play with a three, he can play like we did in the last game with the position of Mason Mount, he can play there.
‘He is going to be the future of Manchester United, that is my feeling.
‘He just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in football in two days.’
A calf injury meant Mainoo was unavailable for the last four matches of Amorim’s tenure at the Theatre of Dreams.
Caretaker boss Fletcher is likely to provide an update on Mainoo’s situation when he faces the media this evening.
