Review: ‘Titanic: Echoes from the Past’ VR experience at Eclipso NYC

On Friday, November 21st, this journalist had the chance to participate in the “Titanic: Echoes from the Past” VR experience at Eclipso NYC.

For well over 30 minutes, people were able to get a VR (virtual reality) experience of the “Titanic” and it was able to sustain their attention for the entire duration. This VR exhibit began with a deep-sea exploration of the Titanic wreck and it gave us a history lesson on the ship.

Not only does it take us to the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean (down nearly four kilometers) but it allows people to walk on the vessel, and experience key moments from the events that happened on the evening that it sank.

Some of the highlight moments from the VR experience included being able to walk on the deck of the ship, the engine room, seeing the radio room and the different accommodations for the various classes, and its famous Grand Staircase.

Also, being able to virtually experience the Titanic as it struck the iceberg that fateful night was another interesting perspective. People will be able to uncover some scenes that have never been scenes before.

This modern VR experience was immersive and innovative, and it combined historical facts, vibrant virtual scenery, and interactive storytelling; moreover, it also shed light on the eight Chinese passengers that boarded the Titanic on its maiden voyage, six of which survived yet their stories have been forgotten.

It also allows us to see the ship from the viewpoint of cinematographer William Harbeck, who perished on the ship as he was documenting it. The late Edward Smith served as its captain for that maiden voyage.

Faith Hill remarked, “I really liked this VR experience! It was very cool to experience myself inside of the Titanic because I watched the movie so many years ago… so to be inside of it felt really interesting and cool.”

“My favorite part was when I was inside with the captain and I got to spin the wheel and I could see the Northern Lights… that was really neat. The iceberg was a bit stressful because the whole ship started shaking,” she elaborated.

The Verdict

Overall, “Titanic: Echoes from the Past” was informative, meticulous, educational, and an emotionally grounded VR experience that resonated with the people that were a part of it.

It underscored the power and relevance of modern technology as a medium of contemporary storytelling. It ought to be enjoyed for its beauty, rawness, and authenticity.

History buffs and fans of the “Titanic” film will find this virtual exhibition to be a real treat.

It was able to put visitors into a time warp and bring them back to April of 1912. This experience was both entertaining and didactic, and people will leave Eclipso NYC with a greater appreciation of the iconic ship and its history.

“Titanic: Echoes from the Past” is highly recommended for individuals over the age of eight years old. It garners two giant thumbs up. Well done.
